June is National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month. Over 3.1 billion people, or 40% of the population, were affected globally by headache disorders in 2021. More women suffer from headache disorders than men, most likely due to hormonal factors. While there are many causes as to why people get headaches and migraines, it may be something that you should mention to your dentist.

Oftentimes, headaches and jaw discomfort can be caused by malocclusion or bruxism, or teeth clenching and grinding. When the upper and lower teeth don’t fit together correctly, the muscles of the jaw, neck and head have to work harder to make your teeth come together, which in turn can cause headaches and migraines.

Bruxism, or tooth grinding and clenching, is often something that is done during our sleep without us being aware of it. Repetitive overuse of the muscles can lead to headaches and migraines as well, often seen more in the morning after a night of clenching and grinding. Not only can bruxism cause headaches, but it also can cause teeth to wear and break.

While any of these can be quite debilitating conditions, there are multiple possible simple solutions that Dr. Stenvall and her Queen City Dental Arts team can discuss with you. It could be as easy as adjusting your bite or making a night guard to wear while you sleep. Let us know if you are experiencing any recurring headaches or migraines. We are always here to help!

We may only take care of human teeth here at QCDA, but we do love our furry friends as well! Many of us have pets of our own at home, and we know how much a part of the family they can be! In honor of National Pet Week, we decided to showcase some of our team’s favorite fur babies.

Dr. Stenvall is a self-proclaimed cat lady and has two 13-year-old kitties at home. Boo Radley and Achilles are brothers and were adopted by Dr. Stenvall when she was living in Philadelphia, PA. Boo and Achilles have gone through multiple moves with Dr. Stenvall, and they have always been good sports in adjusting to all kinds of new environments, including the addition of a human baby to the family in 2022. Favorite activities include eating treats, naps on the sofa and getting lots of petting.

Kristin and her family are dog lovers! They have two dogs, Tebow and Suzie. Tebow is a 12-year-old lab/pointer mix they have had since he was rescued at eight months old. He is known as the neighborhood mascot.

Suzie joined our family last year and is an 11-year-old Chiweenie. She brings so much laughter and fun to the family!

Ebony and her kids have an energetic four-legged family member. Dash is a 5-year-old Bichon Frise. He is very loving and loves belly rubs. Dash’s favorite thing to do is lay in the sun. He also enjoys having food snuck to him by the kids.

Linda loves her golden doodle, Eevee. She is a sweet, energetic, people-friendly dog. She became a member of Linda’s family on her daughter’s sweet 16! Eevee loves treats, playing fetch and giving high five’s. At the end of the day, she cuddles on the sofa. Eevee is an amazing companion and brings so much love and joy to my home!

Our Queen City Dental Arts dentist and team are excited to share our fur families with you and welcome you to call us at 704-542-6533 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Meghan Stenvall in Charlotte, North Carolina.

When we think about going to the dentist for cleanings and fillings, we typically are focused on the prevention of future problems with our gums and our teeth. But one thing that often gets overlooked or forgotten is oral cancer. April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. Here’s what you need to know.

Every year, about 53,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with oral cancer. Oral cancer is unfortunately associated with a high death rate, with 60% of people living less than five years after diagnosis, and approximately 9,000 people dying from its complications annually. Many others who are diagnosed with oral cancer undergo extensive surgeries that leave them with disfigurement and difficulties eating and speaking. Risk factors for oral cancer include smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco, and a new trend that has shown a high association with HPV (human papillomavirus). Early detection and timely treatment are key for the best long-term survivability of oral cancer. In fact, cases that are diagnosed with early detection are associated with an 80% survival rate.

Things that you should look for at home include:

  • Any sore or ulcer that does not heal within 14 days
  • A painless, firm, fixed lump on the outside of the neck that has been there for 14 days or longer
  • Numbness in the tongue or elsewhere in the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • A persistent feeling, like something is caught in your throat
  • A white or red patch with an irregular border, on the gums, tonsils, or on/under the tongue

The common theme is to look for abnormalities that are persistent and do not go away on their own. If you ever have any concerns, always reach out to your team at Queen City Dental Arts. We are more than happy to help you assess anything that you might notice. We do perform oral cancer screenings at every hygiene visit and exam, and we always offer the use of the (VELscope® Enhanced Oral Cancer Assessment System) as a way of promoting early detection.

As always, Dr. Stenvall and the QCDA team are here to help you to keep you and your mouth as healthy as possible!

It’s that time of year again! Clean the baseboards, change the air filters, vacuum under your bed… and re-invigorate your dental regimen! Here are a few easy tips for keeping up with spring cleaning for your mouth.

Spring Clean Your Smile

1) Replace your toothbrush: That cool new toothbrush that you got in your stocking this Christmas… it’s time to toss it. It is recommended that you change your toothbrush every 3-4 months. The same applies if you have an electric toothbrush; make sure you are using a new brush head every 3-4 months as well. Bristles wear out over time, and they are not as effective after a few months. Also, if you or your children get sick, it is recommended to replace your toothbrush once you or your kids are feeling better. No need to keep those germs around any longer than necessary!

2) Clean your Nightguard/Denture/Retainer Cases: You probably are good at rinsing your retainer or nightguard or denture/partials daily after you take them out, but what about the case they sit in? Make it a habit periodically to scrub bacteria and debris out of the case. The wet environment is a great place for bacteria to hang out, which then ends up on your appliance and in your mouth. Yuck!

3) Get your dentures/partials and night guards cleaned: It’s great to use soap and water on your appliances on a regular basis, but there still is probably bacteria that stick behind and need a professional solution to remove. Bring your removable appliances to our office, and the Queen City Dental Arts team can use a strong solution and the ultrasonic cleaner here in our office that will get the rest of that stubborn grime off.

4) Make sure you have your dental cleaning scheduled: It’s easy to lose track of time so we always try to schedule our patients for their next cleaning when they are here for their regular cleaning. This way it is on the calendar in advance. But if it’s been a while since you’ve had a regular cleaning and exam, it is never too late to get back on the wagon. Call our office today, and we will get you in for your checkup to look for cavities or other problems that might be starting.

Call Today

Our professional team at Queen City Dental Arts knows that this is a busy time of year for everyone, but don’t forget these simple dental tips to keep your spring cleaning list on track! We welcome you to give us a call today at 704-542-6533 to schedule your dental cleaning in Charlotte, North Carolina with our dedicated dentist, Dr. Meghan Stenvall.

It’s the time of year when we show love to all of our friends and family by giving them cards, flowers, chocolates … however you show them that you care. But what do you do to show your mouth love? Well, there are lots of things that you can do to show your mouth that you care.

1) Brush: It seems obvious, but it isn’t as easy as it sounds. Dr. Stenvall recommends that we all brush our teeth for a full two minutes, twice a day, every day. It doesn’t matter if you have a manual toothbrush or a fancy electric toothbrush. As long as they are used properly, both can do a good job. Make sure to angle the bristles at a 45-degree angle towards the gum line and get the front and back of every tooth.

2) Floss: It may not be everyone’s love language, but it doesn’t mean it’s not important. We recommend flossing daily. It can be in the morning or at night, in the shower, in front of the TV, whatever is easier for your routine that makes it something that you will remember to do! C-shape flossing is the best (flossing down the sides of each tooth), but if you only have floss picks, they are better than not flossing at all. Believe it or not, if you aren’t flossing, you’re actually not cleaning one-third of the surface of your teeth. People who do not floss regularly are at higher risk of getting cavities between their teeth.

3) Fluoride: Dr. Stenvall recommends using a toothpaste that has fluoride in it. The outer part of the tooth, or enamel, uses fluoride to re-mineralize, so if you are consistently exposing your teeth to fluoride, weakened areas of the enamel can actually go away. Some mouthwashes have fluoride in them as well; look on the bottle for ones that say “fluoride rinse.” Not all “antiseptic rinses” are created equal.

4) Regular checkups: We recommend that everyone come in for routine checkups every six months (3-4 months if you have ever had periodontal treatment). Even if everything is feeling fine, there may be issues starting that need to be addressed. Dr. Stenvall always recommends being proactive rather than reactive. If there’s an issue that can be fixed early, it’s always better to have a small filling than to end up with pain once the cavity gets larger.

5) A healthy diet: Try to limit the number of snacks and time spent sipping throughout the day. We know that a caffeinated drink in the morning or as an afternoon pick-me-up is critical in surviving some days, but try not to sip them for hours. The more often we eat or drink, the more acidic the environment of our mouth is, and the more susceptible to decay are your teeth. Healthy snacks are those that don’t get stuck in our teeth, like fruit, vegetables, nuts, cheese and yogurt. Things that are sticky and sweet or things like chips and cookies that can get lodged between your teeth will be more likely to cause cavities. Of course, water is always the best option as far as drinks are concerned.

We often forget to love ourselves when it comes to showing love to the important people in our lives but remember that, through some simple steps, you are showing yourself love by taking care of your oral health. If you ever have any concerns, Dr. Meghan Stenvall and the Queen City Dental Arts team are always here to help!

January 26th is Dental Drill Day! Although the sound of the dental drill isn’t most people’s favorite sound, we can appreciate the evolution of the dental drill over the years. There is evidence of dentistry being performed as far back as 7000 BC… I wouldn’t want to see what their drills were like!

In the mid-1800s, dental drills were powered by foot pedals, and the first electric handpieces weren’t patented until the late 1800’s. Through multiple improvements over the years, our electric handpieces now use an air turbine and can spin up to 180,000 rpm! You may remember your dentist growing up having to pedal his handpiece and can appreciate all of the changes over time.

With all of the advances that we have seen recently, dentistry has become efficient, precise and virtually painless. Read the full history of dental handpieces here: Here.

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
I couldn’t find my toothbrush … was it taken by my spouse???
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care.
In hopes that maybe I’ll get a new Sonicare!
And I need some more floss, all tied up with a bow,
So the fact that mine has been empty for months, my hygienist won’t know!
I promise myself that I will keep my teeth healthy this year,
So going to the dentist isn’t something I fear.
Maybe they’ll tell me I need a new crown.
Well, that’s ok, I’ll have the best smile in town!
Dr. Stenvall and her team really are not all that frightening.
I even enjoyed my appointment for in-office whitening!
I heard them exclaim as I was finishing my Zoom,
“We love our patients, we’ll see you again soon!”

Well, that may not be exactly how we remember the famous Christmas poem, but you get the idea! However it is said, we would like to wish you and your family a wonderful, healthy holiday season. Our team at Queen City Dental Arts looks forward to seeing you and your smiling faces in 2024!

We all know someone with diabetes or may even struggle with diabetes ourselves.  We also know that diabetes is a disease that affects our entire body, including our oral health.  One of the main challenges of diabetes is controlling blood sugar.  People with high blood sugar also have a higher concentration of sugar in their saliva, which puts them at a higher risk of getting cavities since saliva is normally protective of teeth.  Higher sugar content in saliva also makes your mouth an environment where it is easier for plaque and bacteria to build up on your teeth.  More plaque and bacteria mean you are at a higher risk for periodontal (gum) inflammation or even periodontal disease and bone loss, which can lead to tooth loss.

People with diabetes are also at risk of having decreased saliva (dry mouth or Xerostomia).  This can lead to increased risk of tooth decay, ulcers, sores and thrush (burning mouth or tongue).  Dry mouth can be caused by uncontrolled blood sugar or simply from the medications that diabetic patients take.  Make sure to let Dr. Stenvall know about any changes to your medications which will help her to know what medications she can and can’t prescribe you.

It is even more critical for diabetic patients to be diligent with their oral home care, because of these complications.  We recommend our diabetic patients purchase an electric toothbrush and use it twice a day so they can thoroughly and easily keep their teeth clean.  Also, maintaining regular hygiene visits at Queen City Dental Arts to help prevent oral problems and to catch any potential problems early before they create any pain or infection.

Keeping your blood sugar levels under control is the most important aspect in maintaining overall wellness when you have been diagnosed with diabetes.  Your HgA1C (Hemoglobin A1C) is the best way to determine the stability of your long-term blood sugar levels.  If your blood sugar is well-controlled, your A1C will most likely be below 7%.  Higher A1C may cause poor healing in patients.  Let our team at QCDA know if your diabetes is uncontrolled.  You will want to postpone any surgical procedures until your blood sugar is more stable unless you have an acute dental infection that needs to be addressed right away.  Be sure to follow any post-op instructions closely to prevent any complications after you go home.

Prevention is always the best policy! Do your best to keep your mouth clean at home by brushing twice a day and flossing daily.  Work with your doctor on maintaining controlled blood sugar and if you smoke, talk to your doctor about ways to quit. Reach out to Dr. Stenvall and the Queen City Dental Arts team if you have any questions about diabetes and how it may affect you and your oral health!

October is National Dental Hygiene Awareness Month so we wanted to share with you a few fun facts about our two amazing hygienists!

Lisa has been a hygienist for over 30 years, and 15 of those are right here at our practice … so many of you have known Lisa for years.  Lisa and her husband, Greg, have a son and a daughter, and their lives changed quickly with the arrival of their first grandchildren within 4 days of each other in 2022!  When Lisa isn’t cleaning teeth here at QCDA, she and her husband enjoy spending time in Charleston with their daughter and granddaughter and with their son and grandson here in Charlotte.  “I love being a hygienist and establishing a long-term relationship with my patients,” Lisa says.  “It’s rewarding when I can see that the little tips I give patients make a difference in the overall health of their mouth.”  Lisa makes a difference in all of our lives just by being herself and making us smile every day.

Kim joined our practice in 2022 but has been a dental hygienist for over 20 years.  Although she is originally from Florida, Kim and her husband have called Charlotte home since 2009.  Outside of work, Kim somehow manages to balance being a mom to their six-year-old son (and picking up a lot of Legos!) with gardening, traveling and cooking.  Although she makes a mean ginger chicken stir fry, she’s not too proud to admit that dinner sometimes consists of Sushiya Japan, their favorite take-out spot.  “Dental hygiene is a perfect fit for me because not only do I get to help people reach a better level of health, but I also love getting to know my patients on a personal level.”  Not only does Kim help her patients to feel good about their smiles by helping them to maintain their dental health, it’s hard not to smile when you’re around her because of her genuine and friendly personality.
